Kanye West poses alongside daughter North West and son Saint West as he talks about his concern for their self esteem in today’s day and age.
In Harper’s Bazaar‘s cover for their September issue, Kanye posed alongside his kids as part of a series of covers called The First Families of Music. The magazine describes the series as, “From Bruce Springsteen & Kanye West, to Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey, the greats of rock, pop, and rap come together with their promising offspring and prove that the legacy lives on.”
In the photo, Kanye stands in his own clothing, wearing his own wedding ring. He is holding his son Saint West in his arms with his daughter North perched on top of his shoulders. The caption of the picture reads, “I hope my children never lose their confidence to society.”
Kanye has expressed his concerns about his kids growing up in the world he inhabits many times before. He shares three children with Kim Kardashian: 5 year old North West, 2 year old Saint and 6 month old Chicago.
In a song titled Violent Crimes from his most recent album, Ye, West rapped about being worried for North’s safety as she grows up in a world of social media, online bullying and harassment. Lyrics from the song include, “Don’t you grow up in a hurry / your mom’ll be worried“, “Don’t do no yoga, don’t do pilates / Just play piano and stick to karate / I pray your body’s draped more like mine and not like your mommy’s“, and “I pray that you don’t get it all at once / Curves under your dress, I know it’s pervs all on the ‘net / All in the comments, you wanna vomit / That’s your baby, you love her to death.”
The cover series also features other musical families, each accompanied by a one-liner that defines their perception of family in the context of their life. Here are all the quotes from The First Families of Music.
1. Kanye West:
“I hope my children never lose their confidence to society.”
2. Bruce Springsteen:
“My best advice to my daughter: Keep your focus on what you really care about.”
3. Christina Aguilera:
“I love being mama bear and providing support, strength, and a safe haven to my babies and loved ones, knowing that, above all else, it’s the most important job I have.”
4. Lionel and Nicole Richie:
“I wish for my kids to discover who they are and explore their passions to the fullest.”
5. Erykah Badu:
“I want my children to use their gifts in order to do service for others. That is, to make sure that their gifts are serving something bigger than themselves. And to do what I say.”
6. Theodora Richards and Alexandra Richards:
“We are a traveling band of gypsies, this bunch. With everyone’s crazy lives, it makes for great stories around the fireplace. Music, dancing, and laughter fill our home, and we make it so we’re never apart for too long.”
The issue of Harper’s Bazaar will be available on August 21.
