police find the disturbing path that leads to the true story of the night the young couple has disappeared
Someone had found a body near railroads in East Knoxville, or at least what was left of a body. Whoever they were, they had been completely mutilated and burned and recognized. The slight smell of gasoline floated in the air. Someone had burned this young man on purpose. DNA tests revealed that Chris Newsom was 23 years old.
Chris was missing a day earlier when he was with his girlfriend, 21-year-old Channon
The young couple from Knoxville, Tennessee, only came out a few weeks before their disappearance and both were the kind of kids their parents had always hoped for. They were compassionate, hardworking, smart and funny …
Channon Christian from Nacogdoches, Texas, lived with her parents and her older brother, Chase. They eventually settled in South Knoxville, Tennessee, and her parents built a solid, middle-class life. Channon herself was the kind of fun spirit that really brightened a room and when she met Chris Newsom the two hit her immediately.
Sweet, Young Man
Christopher Newsom was born to parents who had already grown up. He loved sports and, although he was sidelined by an injury in high school, he eventually had a craft career later in life. Although the Newsoms lived a more comfortable life than the Channon family, they still had the same kinds of values. Chris was the same kind of sweet and gentle mind that she was …
Never Came Home
It was the night of January 6, 2007 and Chris and Channon were out on a date at a local restaurant. They both lived at home and, while their parents were not really waiting for their place, they were still expecting the young couple to be home in the morning. Unfortunately, none of them were in bed the next day. Newsoms and Christians, called the police.
The agents started looking around the city for the young couple. Apparently, they had done it for dinner and then went to the apartment complex where Channon’s best friends lived in his car, but that was where the runway ended. The investigators discovered his abandoned car later in the day and began examining the vehicle for clues to what happened to them. What they found was the most telling …
It seems strange, in our modern day, to think of dusting a car for fingerprints, but that is exactly what the Knoxville police did. What they discovered was a number of copies belonging to the missing couple, and one that began at 25-year-old Lemaricus Davidson, who apparently did not live far away.
Once inside Davidson’s home, they discovered Channon Christian’s bruised, stained, and discolored body, stuck in a garbage bag and thrown in the trash. She was less than a year from graduating in sociology from the University of Tennessee. But what happened that night that led the two lovers to such an awful end …
It was then that Channon and Chris were sitting in their car that they were attacked and hijacked by a group of five young African American men they had never seen in their lives. It was the most discordant because the apartment was in a safe neighborhood and such things have very rarely happened.
Within an Inch…
The men fell on them and gagged Chris with one of his socks. After that, they tied his ankles with his own belt, tied his hands around his back, and covered his face with a bandanna and a sweatshirt. Then the men violently violated and beat him one centimeter of his life, before taking him on the rails …
The men then forced Chris to walk barefoot to the rails and forced him to kneel. He was shot in the back of the head but is not dead. Instead, he was alive but completely paralyzed. Eventually, the attackers finished the job by shooting him the execution style three more times, killing him. The attackers then poured gasoline on his body and set it on fire.
Torture for Her
Subsequently, the gang brought Channon to Davidson’s home where they tied her up with strips of fabric from a bedding set and began violating her violently by any means possible. For hours, Channon was used, beaten and molested nightmarish, including a broken chair leg. But his torment was far from over …
They took her to the living room and continued to force herself on her until suddenly, they realized that they had dropped a few stitches on the whole effort. They had left their DNA on her and on the crime scene. Not content with just cleaning the area with bleach, they decided to make the bleach unthinkable and spread all over Channon, including in his throat. Then they wrapped her in a black garbage bag and covered her head in a plastic grocery bag.
A Shocking Scene
Probably one of the most shocking double murderers of the decade, and that happened only because the gang of criminals wanted to punish them for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. At the time of his arrest, Lemaricus Davidson made no mention of help, but the police quickly discovered his connection with the other killers …
The crime scene technicians treated the house mostly empty and found evidence of all the bad acts of Davidson that night. They finally found his fellow assassins, and all were not men. Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, George Geovonni Thomas, 27, Vanessa Coleman, 18, and Davidson’s brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24.
From the beginning, the case against the attackers was plagued by scandals, delays and lawsuits. The idea that in the deep south, where so many hate crimes are perpetrated by Caucasians against African Americans, such a heinous crime could be committed by blacks on whites, raised red flags. The defense seized this confusion and controversy almost immediately …
In the end, despite the delays and delays, the jury could not ignore the brutal nature of the abuse that took place before the murder, nor the horrible ways in which these murders were committed. In the end, almost all the accused, Lemaricus Davidson, Letalvis Cobbins, George Thomas and Vanessa Coleman, were convicted of murder.
Brutal Crime, Brutal Sentence
The last member of the group, Eric DeWayne Boyd, was convicted of being an accomplice of car-jacking and sentenced to 18 years. Of all the defendants, only Lemaricus Davidson was sentenced to death. Both Latalvis and George received life sentences. Vanessa received 53 years, which were then commuted in 35 years. The reverberations of the crime were felt for years after …
An Uncomfortable Crime
In the end, the racial nature of this black and white crime was what made such a story so difficult to follow in the media. The nation as a whole was not the same thing ten years ago and the unpleasant nature of crime and criminals was not what mainstream media wanted to attract attention.
The shameful history of racial intolerance in the south also does not help at all and these cases are almost always considered “reverse racism” as opposed to what they really are, which is old racism. Until we, as a nation, learn to live with each other, such crimes can continue and ultimately, regardless of the color of the perpetrator, murder and torture are bad and should be punished in result.
