Before the historic meeting of President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, his hosts found time to celebrate the POTUS’ 72nd birthday.
Although President Trump will officially turn 72 on Thursday, 14 June, a birthday cake was presented to him during his working lunch at the Istana. Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong and other important officials were attending the lunch as well. The birthday celebration happened 3 days in advance.
President Trump happily blew out a single golden candle on what seemed to be a fruit cake to applause from the other guests at the lunch. However, it is not yet known whether the President made a wish before blowing out the candle or if the guests sang happy birthday.
The Singaporean Foreign Affairs Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan shared a picture of the US President and his birthday cake, captioning the photo, “Celebrating birthday, a bit early.”
The Education Minister, Ong Ye Kung, also shared a photo of the lunch on his social media. In the picture, the menu was clearly visible and showed other dishes at the meal which were being served, including a lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream.
At the lunch, President Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the meeting with Kim Jong Un. He also thanked his hosts for their hospitality.
He said, “We have a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely. But we appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and your friendship.”
POTUS even took to Twitter to further thank Prime Minister Loong for his hard work.

In a later post on Monday evening, the Singaporean Prime Minister took to social media to wish President Trump the best for his summit with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, to express how happy he was to host the United States leader.
He wrote, “Met US President Donald J. Trump at the Istana this morning, before his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un tomorrow. Mr Trump hosted me at the White House last October, so I was glad to reciprocate his hospitality. Also took the opportunity to catch up with him, and discuss developments in the region. I wished him all the best for tomorrow’s summit, which we hope will be a first step on the path to peace. Looking forward to a positive outcome. – LHL.”
While Trump was enjoying his cake, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un squeezed a night tour of Singapore into his busy schedule. Selfies with the controversial leader posted by the Singaporean Foreign Minister and the Education Minister showcased the tour.
President Trump met with Kim Jong Un on June 12. This is the first time a sitting President of the United States has met the leader of North Korea.
