Anja Grunboecks’ latest photo project is called “A child’s playground”, and it is probably the toughest one to look at. It displays the horrific reality of child abuse, and even though Anja used manikins instead of real children, it’s still disturbing. The point was to make the series more anonymous, as it often is in the real life for many of these children.
According to many statistics, s*xual assaults are far more frequent than many people are aware of. Around 10% of child abuse is s*xual abuse, so one in ten children in the world is s*xually abused. Almost 70% of the reported s*xual assaults occur with children under the age of 17, and the majority of them are not reported. 90% of those cases occur within the victim’s circle of acquaintances, family, or friends, and mostly it’s not just a one-off assault. “Evil stranger” stories are a rarity, and these assaults often leave a permanent mark on the victim.
Assaults on children occur in any race, religion, nationality or social class, and it is on the daily agenda no matter where you live.
The estimated figures show that almost 5% of priests and deacons around the world have been accused of s*xual assaults on children.
